GOTRC Finish Line Council Member Feature: Theresa Melroy
Finish Line Council member Theresa Melroy has been involved with Girls on the Run-Chicago since the beginning, when she learned about the program soon after founders Katie Scullion, Jenn Rogers, Kristine Anderson, Julie Moran, and Nancy Robinson launched the program. She began as a volunteer at events and writing grants. She then became a Board Member and served as president of the Governing Board for two terms.
As a member of the Finish Line Council, she’s continued to stay involved as a volunteer and financial supporter. We chatted with Theresa about why she loves Girls on the Run-Chicago and her vision for our future.
Why do you support GOTRC?
I believe in the mission and have seen the positive impact that the program has on the girls and their families.
What is your favorite thing about Girls on the Run?
The community of participants and volunteers, and its positive, uplifting impact on everyone who gets involved.
What advice would you give to your 10-year-old self?
I would advise myself to be kinder and more generous with kids who were different from me.
What have you learned about yourself while working with GOTRC?
Even as an adult, the GOTRC lessons have been so impactful. I have learned to be more open, accepting, and supportive of others and to be respectful of their journeys. I am still learning to be more patient with myself on my own journey and I continue to work on being a better, more effective, communicator.
What do you hope to see GOTRC accomplish in the next five years?
Simply put, the more girls we can reach and serve, the more families that we can positively impact with the program. I believe that will have a ripple effect throughout communities. Better is better and every small step in that direction is a good thing. GOTRC is one way that the girls can feel better about themselves and learn to fulfill their amazing potential. I'm also excited about the possibility of GOTRC graduates becoming coaches and otherwise participating in the programs and sharing their accomplishments with our community.
