Name/Nickname:  Zahraa Boussi

Number of Marathons Run: 4

How many years have you been a Chicago SoleMate:  First year!

Why do you run for Girls on the Run - Chicago?

This is my first year running for GOTR! I have always loved running for charities - giving back in the form of movement is incredibly empowering to me. I did not grow up with an active lifestyle - actually prior to 2019, I never ran or even exercised regularly. My goal throughout my Chicago Marathon journey is to continue to inspire girls that they can do anything they set their mind to! I want my daughter to show up, as her most authentic self and put her best effort into whatever she wants to do. GOTR supports my goal in continuing to inspire our girls to be confident and empower others on the way!

When did you start running?

I started running in 2019, shortly after having my daughter. My initial goal was to live a healthier lifestyle and lose weight. I joined a local run group called “Zaman Run Team” which focused their efforts on raising money for a local nonprofit that helps empower women and children living in poverty. Running with Zaman ignited my passion of giving back to my community by logging miles with like minded individuals. Running has healed me in so many ways; I ran my first marathon (London) 6 months in remission. Being diagnosed with breast cancer was the starting line and running the marathon was my victory lap that I can conquer hard things; the best part was having my kids there at the finish line to watch me go through it all.

What’s your favorite song to listen to while running?

When running with others, I love having conversations! You get to know people on a different and deeper level throughout the many miles. When running alone and needing motivation, I LOVE listening to Fight Song by Rachel Platten.

What’s the best or funniest moment you’ve had while running?

The best part of running has been the incredible community I've found along the way. I've gained amazing friendships that extend beyond the miles. One of my favorite traditions is our summer ‘Track Tuesdays’, where we bring our kids along. It’s not just about the workout—it’s about watching our children build their own friendships while seeing their parents embrace movement and joy. Running has given me so much more than miles—it’s given us an extended family.

What would you tell your 10-year-old self about working toward a big goal?

If I could talk to my 10-year-old self, I’d tell her this: Every little step you take will lead you exactly where you’re meant to be. Don’t get caught up in the background noise or compare yourself to others - focus on your own journey, trust yourself, and keep moving forward.

What running advice do you have for the participants in our program?

Do what makes your heart happy and surround yourself with those who have the similar goals as you. Take it one day at a time and most importantly; show up for yourself, believe in your strength  and love fiercely!

Any words of advice for your fellow teammates?

To my incredible GOTR Marathon teammates—this journey is about so much more than just crossing the finish line. It’s about every step, every breath, and every moment that brought you here. Run with joy, with gratitude, and with the pride of knowing you are part of something bigger than yourself.

When the miles get tough, remember why you started. Draw strength from the energy of the city, the cheers of the crowd, and the powerful impact you’re making. Trust your training, listen to your body, and most importantly, enjoy each step of the way!
